Quality of the separation is dependent on the amount of separation given. I have found 2 to 4 inches generally works best. You can also try rotating the camera 4 degrees (give or take a few degrees) on the "Y" axis.

If you reverse the left and right images, or do a horizontal flip, the image will appear to recede rather then pop up out of the picture plane. I have found that this effect works better for images that have foreground items that run off the edge of the picture plane.
